Description

'Hotel Men Botel' ['Hotel in a Bottle'][!]...A dynamic disco/cabaret song sung by Sharda with a classy and ametuerish picturisation that is a sensation! The glamour and conviction of the exotic young Tina Munim with the smirking lurking Janab [Rajesh Khanna] is just poetry in motion. A picture of deception and detective work behind a facade of partying and larking on...Hindi Cinema long before it became 'Bollywood' and at its absolute escapist best! ORCHESTRATION"Hi, I am Lanona" is the unforgettable line to get the song started with Rajesh Khanna as a shiekh with a very lenghty name who does not want to drink... so Tina Munim is carried on by the chorus boys as a cabaret queen...great stuff! The song is Western Pop Song FORM [sections over time]: Into (spoken) - Chorus [TONIC (I) 'home' note area 'doh'/'sa'] + Bridge 01 + Verse [DOMINANT (V) 'away' note five area 'soh'/'pa'] + Bridge 02 [with Trumpet solo] + Verse (V) + Chorus (I) + Verse (V) + Chorus (I) + CODA [end section][repeats chorus and ends in speaking].The ENSEMBLE is all ACCOUSTIC [live] insturments apart from an Electric Guitar and Electric Slap Bass. The PERCUSSION [instruments you hit] are Western Drum Kit. This makes for a rich sound, even though MULTI-TRACK [one track recorded and another unnaturally recorded after it then final mix] are used, the sound is still rich and ACCOUSTIC.The song has a Western METRE [beats per bar] of four. There is a constant pop backbeat with occasional FILLS [rhythmic full stops] at the ends of section in the snare drums. The most wonderful thing about the song are the 15+ Western VIOLINS. These strings 'skate' over the back beat in the most energising and thrilling way. Yet there is no HARMONY [western system of independent notes and melodies organised into chords]. The violin parts are LAYERED [multiple melodies overlayed ontop of others for variety and colour but with no HARMONIC ideas like the West]. The strings just seem to fill in any seconds in the songs where the singing is sustained, paused or and end of section CADENCE [musical full stop] is needed. In the bridges the violins run up and down SCALES [musical steps] with no real purpose or aim but to project movement and energy onto the listener. The strings have the sense of INDEPENDENT PARTS [where the song melody and other instruments all play different things rather than all play the same] but with with a linear rather than HARMONIC thinking. Wonderful! The violins are close-mic so very unnaturally loud in the mix, quite a large number of them and soaked in electronic REVERB [echo] which makes for this artificial and powerful sound skittering over the song to thrill.Sharda's voice has a sharp TIMBRE [musical colour that identifies musical instruments] and the electronic REVERB makes the sound more focused and unnatural which sounds powerful and exciting. It appears that in the film, the soundtrack has been slightly speeded up which makes her voice sound younger and more strident. Whereas the LP has a slower 'real' recording where her voice is lower and more elderly in tone. The speeding up works well. The dialogue inbetween the words makes the song more memorable and fun. There is use of live BRASS [metal instruments blown into with fanfare sound] which adds a more cabaret and thicker sound, plus adds variety from the singing and strings. The Electronic Slap Bass plays an OSTINATO [repeated figure] quite rapidly through out the song. It is not, however, HARMONY. It is more like a traditional Indian DRONE [long sustained note under a melody]. It works well to add low REGITSERS [pitches]. An Electric Guitar adds OSTINATOs and works in some ANTIPHONY [question and answer] phrases with the strings. VIDEO The visuals are theatrical and a 'decoy' scene for catching villians. Rajesh Khanna is great as the shiekh. Tina Munim is glamorous and has some wonderful close up shots. The hair and make up are very 1980s. Sharda's speeded voice makes Tina look like a beautiful singing doll! The chorus boys look like they don't know what they are doing and the who visual is wonderful escapism.
